CBR Group Guide: Week 9
WEEK 9
Pray
Read Hebrews 9
Stuff you should know:
Read Leviticus 16. The Day of Atonement was one of the most important days of the Jewish calendar because it was the only time of the year that the priest was allowed to enter into the holy of holies.
Verse 22 says, “everything is purified with blood.” This is a bit odd to us but as far back as Genesis, blood represented life. Sin in the Bible is like a disease. It brings death. As the priests sprinkled blood, it represented the cleansing power of life in the midst of death.
Stuff you should see:
Main point: Through his death on the cross, Christ did once for all what we could never do on our own and what the sacrifices in the old covenant never did. He made a way for us into the very presence of God.
ACTS Prayer (Pray through your pen and conversation)
Adoration: Praise the Father for His attributes and actions
Confession: Confess your sinfulness and acknowledge your sins
Thanksgiving: Thank Jesus for his Salvation (past, present, future)
Supplication: Ask the Spirit to transform you in particular ways
Questions for Application:
We can often see the Old Testament as kind of bloody. But, the sacrifices show us that sin is nothing to shrug at. It is destructive and costs something precious to make it right. Do you see your own sin the same way? Is there an area of your life that you have seen as “no big deal” but is actually a costly sin?
The author makes a point of saying that Jesus died “once for all” (v. 26). Jesus has been sacrificed for your sin, all of it. There is nothing you have done that can make that untrue and there is no sin that you will do that he didn’t already pay for. Do you believe that? What is an area of your life that you feel you have to “make things right” in order to earn God’s forgiveness? Remember that Jesus died “once for all.”
