CBR Group Guide: Week 7
WEEK 7
Pray
Read Hebrews 7
Stuff you should know:
Read Psalm 110. The author references back to this prophecy to show that Jesus is a legitimate priest even though he is not a Levite but from the tribe of Judah. But, he also quotes it to show that he is a better priest because he is declared such by God himself.
A tithe is a “tenth” portion of something that is given to God.
Verses 9-10 are a bit strange because they say that Levi paid tithes to Melchizedek even though he was born around 100 years later. What it means is that Abraham as the representative of Israel paid tithes to this man, Melchizedek. Because of that, anyone coming from Abraham’s line (including Levi) owes something to this man.
Stuff you should see:
Main point: Jesus was and is forever the greater priest of a greater covenant.
ACTS Prayer (Pray through your pen and conversation)
Adoration: Praise the Father for His attributes and actions
Confession: Confess your sinfulness and acknowledge your sins
Thanksgiving: Thank Jesus for his Salvation (past, present, future)
Supplication: Ask the Spirit to transform you in particular ways
Questions for Application:
The Mosaic law in vv. 18-19 is called weak and useless because it cannot make anything perfect and it cannot save. Although we don’t look to the Mosaic law, we make laws in our lives all the time. Usually they are some statement or vow (unspoken or spoken) about how you will live your life such as, “I will never ______ .” or “No matter what, I will always ______.” Are there any principles, vows, rules, or commitments that you look to that, deep down, you believe make you a good person or keep your life on track? Talk about why these are powerless to do what only Jesus can do.
Jesus “always lives to make intercession” for sinners like you and I. He is praying for you right now. What are some areas of struggle (sin, relationship, circumstance, etc.) in your life right now? Pray for those and as you do, remember that Jesus is also praying for them too.
