CBR Group Guide: Hebrews 4
WEEK 4
Pray
Read Hebrews 4
Stuff you should know:
Read Psalm 95. The psalmist recalls the generation of Israelites who came out of Egypt and failed to trust God to take them to the promised land. Because of their lack of faith, they were not able to enter into the promised land, the place of rest that God had promised his people.
Rest is an idea running through the Scriptures. It is first brought up in Genesis 1 where God creates and on the seventh day he rests. But the seventh day, unlike all the other days, has no evening or morning. God did not need rest on the seventh day because he was tired. Instead, it was a symbol for God entering into life with his people. The promised land then was meant to be a kind of return to the garden, God once again is in His place with His people.
Stuff you should see:
Main point: The only thing separating you from rest in God’s presence is your disobedience. But, we aren’t on our own. We have Jesus who knows our weakness, and has the grace to help us in our need.
ACTS Prayer (Pray through your pen and conversation)
Adoration: Praise the Father for His attributes and actions
Confession: Confess your sinfulness and acknowledge your sins
Thanksgiving: Thank Jesus for his Salvation (past, present, future)
Supplication: Ask the Spirit to transform you in particular ways
Questions for Application:
The opposite of disobedience is rest in who God is and what he has done. In other words, sin is the search for rest in all the wrong places. Can you think of ways in your life that you see this?
Jesus is there, waiting to provide grace in time of need. Think of the moments when you are most tempted. What would it look like to turn to your great high priest?
